Kapolei High Opens Oʻahu Football’s New Era

For the first time since the 1970s, Oʻahu’s best football teams will play each other during the regular season. And Kapolei High plays in the first game of this exciting new era.

What: Kapolei vs. Kamehameha in the 1st-ever Open Division football game.
When: Friday, 8/10, 5pm
Where: Aloha Stadium
Know This: Tickets are $8, parking is $8. Cash Only!

For 40 years, private and public school football teams have been in different leagues. Each league was dominated by a few good teams.

When the good teams played each other, you’d get some pretty good games. When they didn’t, you’d get games like this:

No more! “The new division might be the toughest league in America,” Campbell coach Darren Johnson told Nick Abramo of Hawaiʻi Prep World.

Coach isn’t complaining. He, like the rest of the island’s football fans, is rejoicing.

In the new Open Division, the island’s top teams play every week. It’s less like a football season and more like a three-month-long tournament.

The nine teams:

  • Kapolei
  • Campbell
  • Waiʻanae
  • Mililani
  • Saint Louis
  • Kahuku
  • Kamehameha
  • Farrington
  • Punahou

The newest school in the Open Division gets the honor of playing in the league’s very first game. Kapolei (founded 2000) faces Kamehameha (founded 1887) in the opener of a Friday Night Lights doubleheader at Aloha Stadium.

It’ll be the #8-ranked Hurricanes vs. #6 Kamehameha Warriors at 5pm, followed by the unranked Waiʻanae Seariders vs. #1 Saint Louis Crusaders, the 12th-ranked team in the country, at 7:30pm.

If you go, bring cash! Parking ($8 per car) and tickets ($8 adults, $5 seniors/students, $0 age 5 and under) are cash only.

If you can’t make it this week, you’ll have plenty more chances. There are eight more weeks in the season. Here’s the full state football schedule, with times, dates and places.
