Here’s what to look forward to over the next 12 months:
Young’s Fish Market Opens At Kapolei Commons
Our announcement that Young’s Fish Market is coming to Kapolei was our most popular Facebook post of the year. Excitement will continue to build for the planned spring opening of this island institution.
This mural by artist Kamea Hadar is already complete at the new Kapolei Commons location, which shares a parking lot with the Bank of Hawaiʻi.
Foodland Farms (and The Grove) Open at Ka Makana Aliʻi
Kapolei gets a new grocery store when Foodland Farms throws open its doors sometime in 2019. The Foodland Farms at Ala Moana has a massive pre-made food section, plus a beer & wine bar where you can imbibe while you shop.
Foodland Farms is part of The Grove, the second phase of Ka Makana Aliʻi. The area is envisioned as a center for healthy living. It will also have a Hawaiʻi Pacific Health clinic, as well as a PetSmart. The Grove will also have other shops and restaurants, which are TBD.
Two Can’t-Miss Hawaiian Cultural Events at Pu‘uokapolei
Ulu A‘e Learning Center is sponsoring two events at Pu‘uokapolei, the historic site inside Kapolei Regional Park. Both events give west side residents a chance to celebrate Hawaiian culture at the most sacred and important place in the ahupua‘a of Honouliuli.
Sat., Feb. 2: Makahiki Games at Pu‘uokapolei
Sat., June 21 – Sun., June 22: Kapu‘uola Hula Festival
Marriott Residence Inn Opens
August is the tentative open date for Kapolei’s third hotel. The structure is up, now they just need to finish the outside and bring in a whole lotta toilets. Typical Residence Inns rooms are large suites, closer in size to small apartments than traditional hotel rooms. The rates should be similar to those at the existing Embassy Suites.
The Kapolei/Ko Olina Link Gets Closer
Oceanwide, a Chinese company, owns the land between Kapolei Commons and Kapolei. They’re planning a community with a golf course, along with an extension of Kapolei Parkway that will connect the developments of Ko Olina with the commercial center of Kapolei. The first stretch of that road is complete.
Teriyaki Madness Opens
The popular lunch chain will open its first Hawaiʻi location in Kapolei, likely in the second half of the year. It serves freshly-cooked Seattle-style teriyaki and veggies over rice.
Kapolei Commons Monthly Events Continue
The monthly events that began this fall at The Lawn at Kapolei Commons will continue in the new year. Confirmed for 2019 are:
January 19th: Fit Fest
February 9th: Movie on the Lawn: Family Date Night (Lady and the Tramp)
March 9th: Touch a Truck
American Idol Films Live at Aulani
The song competition will film their showcase round at Aulani Resort — the show’s first-ever stop in Hawaiʻi. The showcase rounds are when contestants perform live for the judges and a studio audience. This year’s judges—Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie—will all be staying on the island. Ryan Seacrest too, of course. The upcoming season starts in March.
Kapolei Business Park Expands
The land is graded and lots are for sale as Kapolei Business Park crosses Kalaeloa Boulevard.
Kulana Hale Rises
Construction will continue on Kulana Hale, the 13-story affordable living project on Wākea St. The first tower, which will be for seniors, is going up now. Construction on the second building should begin in 2019.
