Kapolei’s 3rd Hotel: The Residence Inn Opens

Kapolei’s third hotel is officially open.

The Residence Inn by Marriott Kapolei threw open its doors yesterday. Its 183 suites are now available for vacationers and staycationers.

The entrance is a bit tucked away on 731 Kunehi St., behind the new 7-Eleven, Hele, and Starbucks.

But the hotel itself isn’t hiding. The large common areas — an outdoor, heated pool and firepit on one side of the lobby, and bocce ball courts on the other — face onto Kunehi St. That’s a big difference from the nearby Embassy Suites, where the pool is out of sight behind the building.

The Residence Inn Kapolei bar is open to the public. For drinks:

  • Maui Brewing and other beers on tap ($6-$7)
  • Wine by the glass ($8-$11)
  • Specialty cocktails ($12-$14)

The bar also serves a menu of light bites:

  • Sandwiches/Flatbread ($9-$11)
  • Dips/Pupus ($6-$9)
  • Soup/Salad ($5-$8)

On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, the hotel holds RI Mix events. These events features pupus, drinks, and sometimes food trucks. They are free for guests and sometimes open to the public. (We’ll follow up with a schedule when we get one.)

The lobby is bright and spacious. Off the lobby is a small store with snacks, cold drinks, and toiletries — it’s open 24 hours so guests can get basic items.

Opening up onto the lobby is the huge breakfast area. Residence Inns offer a free hot breakfast buffet. It’s a hearty one with lots of choices — options include chicken sausage, biscuits and gravy, and scrambled eggs whites, along with scrambled eggs. As you can see, they had a little fun with the decor.

Residence Inn Kapolei rooms are on the larger side, they’re intended for long-term visitors and families. Every room has a kitchen and microwave, and guests can even get groceries delivered, free.

Room sizes range from a studio with a king-sized bed, up to 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom suites.

Room rates will, of course, change depending on demand. For example: You can book a studio for $251/night next weekend, but during the week of Christmas that same room is going for $545/night.

Generally speaking, the Residence Inn rates will be slightly more than the nearby Embassy Suites or the Hampton Inn at Ka Makana Aliʻi.

A fourth Kapolei hotel is on the way: Garn Development, which owns the Residence Inn and Embassy Suites, plans to open another hotel in the same area by 2021.
