Mehana Snack Shop Reopens Under New Ownership
New owner Roger Rivera is a Mehana resident. He once worked at a snack shop, and thinks the opportunity for a similar shop in Mehana is a good one. “It’s something the community likes and so far people really are giving good feedback,” he told me.
Snacks, Soft-Serve, Shave Ice, and Popcorn
The name is the same, but the new shop has a wider variety of traditional local snacks:
- Li Hing Mui Seeds
- Rice Crackers
- Red Peanuts
- Shredded Ika
- Many more — a whole wall, as you can see
Brand-name chips and soda are also available.
The new shop is also offering Hawaiian Frost soft serve. Rivera told me he’ll be changing the flavors every other day so there’s always something new to try. The Chocolate Haupia Hawaiian Frost is already winning rave reviews.
Shave ice is also available, in ten different flavors, plus traditional add-ins like condensed milk, ice cream, or li hing mui powder.
Other food items include popcorn with your choice of seasoning — like li hing mui powder, furikake, or hot pepper. Plus, a daily soup is available.
Another nice touch: Ice! Mehana folks can make a quick stop on the way to the beach to snag snacks and ice to keep their drinks cold.
Drinks/Desserts at Mehana Snack Shop
Coffee, iced tea, and lemonade are the stars of the drink menu.
Hot coffee is self-serve, and Mehana also offers cold brew coffee.
One popular refresher is the Galaxy Lemonade, made with lemonade and blue herbal tea. When the drink gets stirred it turns a unique color.
New, Longer Hours
The previous iteration of Mehana Snack Shop had limited hours, weekdays only. Under new management the shop will be open from:
The longer hours give locals a better chance of fitting a stop to Mehana into their normal routine.
Mehana residents can walk or ride bikes to Mehana Snack Shop. There’s also a small amount of parking adjacent to the shop.
Coming in 2020: Outdoor Movies
In the new year, Rivera says he plans to start hosting events. In January he hopes to launch the first of a series of monthly movie nights in the courtyard in front of the shop.
Stay tuned: We’ll announce them when we hear the schedule.
