How West Side Moms Stay Fit During The Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t stopped one group of dedicated West Oʻahu moms from staying connected — and staying in shape.

Since the second week of March, FIT4MOM Central Oʻahu has been providing online video workouts over Zoom seven days a week. Soon, virtual classes will be available for expectant moms, too.

“My members are grateful that we continued workouts during our stay at home order,” owner and instructor Melanie Gonzalez says. “It allowed them to continue to exercise and video chat with the other mamas and keiki.”

Since the exercises mostly involve bodyweight and movement, members don’t need a lot of extra equipment. Melanie says they have incorporated dumbbells into one of the daily sessions — but moms that don’t have weights use cans, juice bottles, or even their toddler as a substitute.

Melanie says that the mamas are excited to gather in person again once everyone’s comfortable doing so. The Zoom classes will continue through the month of July, at least.

For some moms, the stay-at-home orders have been not only challenging, but have caused added stress that make it difficult to continue with an exercise routine to stay in shape. FIT4MOM Central Oʻahu provides social and physical benefits that these moms use as a way to achieve balance and wellness.

New Classes For Expectant Mothers

Expectant mothers will also soon have access to virtual workouts. FIT4MOM is creating a virtual and safe platform for expectant mothers called FIT4BABY.

This hour-long class will combine elements of strength training, cardiovascular exercises and stretching and balancing exercises. The main benefits of exercising while pregnant are improved sleep, mood, and energy, but fun and community are a major bonus too. Participants will meet other local moms-to-be and build a motherhood community before baby arrives.

All FIT4BABY instructors are certified and trained in guidelines from The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, so the special needs and restrictions of exercising while pregnant will be taken into account. The class is for all stages of pregnancy and all fitness levels.

“We would love to invite all moms-to-be to give us a try and experience not only our very effective workouts, but also the joy of building your motherhood community before baby arrives,” Gonzalez said.

FIT4MOM is surveying interested moms-to-be to determine the best days/times for the classes. Answer the survey here.
