Best of Kapolei: Where To Eat When You’re Hungry At 5PM

Early diners can have it all. You have your pick of tables, your server won’t be busy, and you don’t have to worry that the special will run out.

And, at some of the west side’s most popular restaurants, you can get some sweet discounts.

For Foodies: Roy’s Ko Olina Sunset Prix Fixe

The star of the west side’s early dining scene is surely the Sunset Prix Fixe menu at Roy’s Ko Olina.

For $32, you get a three-course meal, the star of which is an incredibly tender Sous Vide Short Rib. For an extra $15, you can add 2 oz. wine pairings with each course.

The menu is available from 5pm to 6pm.

Now, most of the entrees at Roy’s are around $50. Apps and desserts hover around $15. Make a 5:45pm reservation, and you can get a full meal for less than half of what it will cost you 15 minutes later.

The Menu

Starter: Mari’s Organic Baby Green Salad or Soup of the Day

Optional Pairing: 2oz. Roy’s Prosecco

Main Course: Tender Sous Vide Short Rib with Organic Baby Garden Vegetable, Horseradish Yukon Potato Puree, Cabernet Sauce

Optional Pairing: 3oz. Barrossa Valley Shiraz

The extended happy hour at Takumi is a terrific option — especially if you skipped lunch and need food fast. They offer a rotating menu of happy hour dishes, based on what’s fresh in the kitchen. Each dish is $6, and they are designed to come out fast — we’re talking within minutes.

Takumi’s executive chef Victor Jian was trained in Japan, and bases all his concepts on the Japanese dining philosophy.

This is izakaya-style dining — portions that can be ordered as you decide how full you want to get, or how long you want to stay at the bar.

The happy hour runs from 5pm-8pm, Sunday-Thursday.

Takumi is at 4850 Kapolei Parkway, in the same shopping center as Foodland.

For Craft Beer Fans: Kalapawai Happy Hour (3pm-6pm)

If you’re the type of person that loves trying new beer (or wine, or cocktails), choose Kalapawai when you’re eating early.

Until 6pm, their fantastic selection of local draft beers is $1 off. (Wine by the glass and house cocktails, too.)

You can enjoy your booze savings and order off the regular menu. Or, order off the bar menu and save even more — everything is $2 off during happy hour.

The servings on the bar menu are very generous. The fish tacos are a meal in themselves. So are the crab cake sliders, pictured above. Buy 3 apps and you’ll walk away perfectly satisfied.

Kalapawai Market & Cafe is at 711 Kamokila Blvd in Kapolei.

For Pizza Fans: Brick Oven Pizza Happy Hour (3pm-6pm)

If you’re craving pizza, Brick Oven is Kapolei’s most popular spot. Their happy hour prices are available in the entire restaurant, and happy hour lasts until 6pm. You won’t save anything on your pizza, but beer is $1 off and glasses of wine are just $5.

Brick Oven Pizza is inside the shopping center at 889 Kamokila Blvd. The restaurant is on the corner of Alohikea St. and Haumea St.
